The New England Steamship Co. was one of the major operators of coastal passenger steamers between New York and southern New England ports. They are best know for their Fall River Line (between N.Y. and Fall River, Ma.), but the Providence Line and New Bedford Line were the leaders on their routes and operated with stately hospitality.
The company was as subsidiary of the New York, New Haven & Hartford RR.
Passenger traffic began to decline in the 1930's and never recovered. Service halted with a labor strike in the late-1930's, and eventually the last ships were requisitioned for military duty in 1942.
